Tyrolian Socks
~ Juliet Page
julepage@annapolis.net
These socks are knit from the top down. They have a Tyrolian Fairisle pattern in the leg and instep, and a solid toe, heel and and sole. Both right and left socks are identical. There are three seams: One on either side of the foot, and one up the back in the center. The back of the heel is grafted (Kitchner stitched) to the main leg. I use mock rib for the cuffs (I don't own a ribber ...yet) with some clear knit-in elastic on the inside part of the mock rib.
DAK5 files are available.... HERE
Yarn: Wool-Ease, Black Sprinkles & Beige
Gauge: 5.4 St/in 7.5 Row/in
Tension: 2 (Fairisle) / 0 (Mock Rib) (On my
KH270 Bulky - Check your gauge)
Size: Men's 9-11
Mock Rib Cuff:
E-Wrap cast on from Left 38 to right 37 EON.
At T=0, knit 15 rows using knit in elastic.
Knit 15 rows without elastic. Double over and hang the cast on
row onto the needles, bringing all the needles into HOLD. Pass
the carriage to the other side without knitting anything. Bring
the unused needles into HOLD and e-wrap the empty needles.
Knit 1 row at T=1. (This should be 75 needles total)
Leg:
Turn on the program, (or punchcard). Set the RC=0 and T=2. Knit
in Fairisle. Follow the decrease table below. You start with
(This is 1 stitch decrease every 7 then 8 then 7 then 8... rows)
Decrease 1 st each side when RC=7, 15, 22, 30, 37, 45, 52, 60,
67, 75, 82, 90, 97
Knit 8 more rows until RC=105.
You should have 49 needles when done with this part.
Cast off 12 stitches on each side using ravel cord and waste
yarn. You should now be left with 25 stitches.
Instep:
Continue in Fairisle. Knit 50 rows.
Toe Shaping:
Switch over to straight stockinette stitch in black. (I think
this is where some people use a blending thread
to strengthen the yarn, although I have never tried it).
Using HOLD shortrowing, put one needle into HOLD on the same side
as the carriage every row until 10 needles are
left in work in the center. Immediately put 1 needle into work on
the opposite side of the carriage on every row,
until all needles are back in work. This should take a total of
30 rows.
Sole: Continue in stockinette. Knit 50 rows.
(you could also put Fairisle here for thicker soles, but be sure
to
line up the pattern with the upside down mirror image of the
instep so the seam looks nice).
Heel Shaping:
Exactly the same as Toe shaping. Cast off using Ravel Cord and
Waste Yarn.
Finishing.
Block the Leg, Instep and Sole.
Join the seam at the back of the leg. Graft the heel to the back
of the leg. Sew up the seams at the sides of the feet.
Here is an attempt at the pattern for those without DAK:
