The Snowmobile Scarf
Shared by Linda the "Red" at ARed1@aol.com

My kids are snowmobilers. It is against the law to wear a scarf while snowmobiling, so the kids wear bandanas around their necks, which aren't really too warm. So I got this idea............
Picture a stocking hat without the top......I call it *The Snowmobile Scarf*!!
(I hope I can explain this clearly, and would love any suggestions you may have to improve it)

CO with waste yarn 80 sts and hang comb & weights.
Knit 10 or so rows with waste yarn, change to main color yarn and knit 200 rows. Take off on waste yarn.
Go to embroidery machine and embroider design of your choice in the middle of this long piece of knitting.
Rehang on the machine, keeping the top the top and wrong side facing you. Then I bring up the bottom and hang those sts. Make one pass at 2 tensions greater than you used to knit the piece. Bind off around the gate peg. Then I sewed it together, using what I think is called the mattress st, the one that makes an invisible seam. I put the seam formed by binding off the sts in the center of the back, that way your embroidered design is on the center of the front. You seam it like you would the stocking hat. You end up with a tube that you can slide over your head to your neck to keep it nice and toasty!

I used Trenzado at ten 8, and duo magic at ten 4 for my grandson who saw it and loved it. Kids have a hard time with scarves too. Also, if it is really cold, this can be pulled up to your nose and there is still enough to keep your neck warm.

You could do this with the g-carriage, or do a pattern, the possibilities are endless. My son has an Arctic Cat snowmobile so I did his in black and white checks.

Do them to match the hats you are making too!
