Placemats

Our wholesaler had a Christmas in July day and one of the things that I demonstated was Christmas pattern place mats. Every one enjoyed them. Here is the pattern which finished measures about 12" x 16".

Materials yarn is Trenzada, fusing material is called Fusing Web, at any fabric center, a good guality percale for the backing, 1/2" folding bias tape, or you can make your own bias tape to match your backing.

Cast on with waste, knit 1 row ravel cord over 140 plus stitches, depending on your pattern.

Knit 140 + rows depending on your pattern choice. Take off on waste.

Block the knitting well, so that it is nice and smooth. Do not kill the yarn. Remove your ravel cord and waste yarn.

Follow the directions for the fusing web. Apply to the back of the knitting.

Cut your material back to the same size as the knitting.

Peel back the cover on the fusing and place your material over it. Press evenly to have a good joining of the material to the knitting.

Cut to your place mat pattern. I use a very shallow oval. Using a 5" sauce dish makes a good curve for the corners.

If you feel safer, stitch around the edge about 1/4" in from the edge.

Use wide bias tape or cut your own bias from your matching material. This gives the best look to your mat if you use your material for the bias.

Stitch the bias to the back first and then turn to the front and top stitch.

Mat can be sprayed with Scotch Guard if you like. The mats laundry nicely.

There is a tool available from fabric centers that lets you pre-fold your material into a bias. They are great and come in different sizes.
