This would make a great hostess gift....a stocking stuffer for your husband or your in-laws. If you are going to a Holiday dinner this year, take one of these along with a bottle of wine...trust me, it'll be a hit!
MACHINE: Any
4.5mm machine
YARN: 2 strands 2/24 or similar weight white (W)
(main color), Red (R) and Green (G).
TENSION: 6 except where otherwise noted
NOTES: Program punchcards before beginning.
Program the tree pattern in upside down; I use the initials from
the back of the Brother Stitch World Book. Other motifs may be
substituted. If initial, programmed in right-side-up, activate
the upside down and reverse keys on your machine when knitting.
Gauge is not important but a measurement chart is given for those
who may wish to transpose to the bulky machine.
Abbr.: W=White; R-Red; G-Green;COL
(R) = Carriage on Left (Right); EON = Every Other Needle: WP =
Working Position; NWP = Non-working position; RC = Row Counter;
FI = Fairisle
INSTRUCTIONS: RC=000, tension 4;
COR; pull into working position EON 38L and 37R.
1. With R, e-wrap cast on left to right. Thread yarn into
carriage.
2. Knit 1 row to L. Hang comb, weights. Put NWP needles into WP.
Tension 6.
3. Knit 1 row. Make sure empty needles picked up a loop.
4. Knit to Rc = 18. COR change to W.
5. Knit 2 rows. RC - 20. COR. Do 1 x 1 picot (transfer every
other stitch to needle on right).
6. Knit 1 row. Make sure empty needles picked up a loop.
7. Knit to RC - 41 (COL). Hang hem. (put e-wrapped loops on every
other needle)
8. Knit to RC 43. COL. Do 1 x 2 picot. (beginning with 2nd stitch
on R, transfer every 3rd stitch to needle on right; leave empty
needles in WP).
9. Knit 1 row. Make sure empty needles picked up loop.
10. Knit to RC 55. COL. Carriage outside turn mark, program in
Holly Pattern.
11. Knit 1 row, COR. Insert G in second feeder, set carriage to
FI and knit 5 rows of pattern, changing from G to R on middle row
of pattern and then back to G. (Will have to cut G to restart on
other side after using R). Remove G from feeder. Set carriage for
plain knitting. RC = 61. COL.
12. With W, knit to RC 71. COL. Program in Initial or other
motif. Make sure to activate upside down and reverse key if you
programmed the initial/motif in rightside up! Thread R or G into
second feeder, set carriage to FI.
13. Knit 30 rows initial (or alternate motif, adjusting number of
rows as needed) as single motif FI, wrapping sides to prevent
separation. RC = 102. COR. Unthread R, reset carriage for plain
knitting.
14. Continue knitting with W to RC 111. COL. Program Tree
pattern, thread G into second feeder, set carriage for FI.
15. Knit 13 rows of tree pattern. RC - 125. COL. Unthread G,
reset carriage for plain knitting.
16. With W, knit to RC 133. COL, pullout every other needle to B
position, set carriage to FI and insert R into feeder B. (You are
going to do a manual FI).
17. Knit 1 row. Pull out every other needle (alternate ones from
previous row, they have W stitches on them, carriage still set to
FI.
18. Knit 1 row. RC 135. COL. Unthread R, set carriage to plain
knit.
19. With W only, knit to RC 145. COL remove W, thread R into
feeder.
20. Knit 1 row. Starting with 2nd stitch from right, transfer
every 3rd stitch to needle to right so you have 2 stitches
working and 1 stitch empty. Push empty needles to NWP.
21. Tension 4, knit 1 row. RC 146. COR.
22. Break off yarn leaving about a 10 inch tail. Thread into
needle and take stitches off machine onto the tail of yarn.
NOTE: You may wish to block piece at this point (while it is
still flat) before gathering bottom onto tail of yarn.
FINISHING: Gather bottom of cover tail, securing loose end. Sew
up back. Make 3 stitch slip stitch cord about 12 inches long.
Thread thorough picots at base of cuff, sew bells (optional) on
ends of cord. Slip in bottle of wine (or bottle of anything else
of your choice).Tie cord into a bow.
