Cast on 40sts in a cotton yarn
knit 3 rows
now pattern thus:

1st row: knit 5sts, double knit by putting the yarn around the needle twice
and knitting off so that there are two stitches on needle,
do this for every St until last 5sts, knit 5

2nd row: knit 5. purl only 1 of the two stitches of the next stitch
allowing the other stitch to drop down, so that it forms a long loop, do this until last 5sts, knit 5

3rd row: knit
4th row: knit

these four rows are the pattern, repeat them until required length then knit four rows and cast off.
