Bring 11 needles (L5 thru R6) into work position and do a closed edge cast on. I did an e-wrap.
Knit one row across these needles, then transfer the following stitches and put the empty needles out of work.....

L2 to L3
L1 to R1
R2 to R1
R3 to R4

You now have 3 stitches on needle R1, 2 stitches on needle R4, and 2 stitches on L3, and 4 needles out of work. Knit one row, set your carriage to "hold", and knit 4 rows according to the below chart...

x = knit o = hold _ = out of work

Row 1. xox_ _o_ _xox
Row 2. xox_ _o_ _xox
Row 3. xox_ _o_ _xox
Row 4. xox_ _o_ _xox

Cancel the "hold" setting so carriage knits plain and knit 2 rows. Repeat these 6 rows for the pattern.

**For a different looking braid, keep carriage in "hold" and when you get to rows 5 & 6, knit those last 2 rows according to the chart below...
