The yarn is Perla by Tamm, Tension is 4 for the Garter Carriage Ribbing and 5 for the Body. Machine is Knitking 881. Gauge 8 st & 13 rws per inch.

Cast on 173 stitches and knit 14 or 15 rows in 1x1 rib, ending with carriage on left. Do not cut yarn, but remove onto waste yarn
Back: RC 0. Starting at the end with the yarn, hang 64 stitches on center 63 needles, 2 stitches on the left needle. Knit 1 row. On carriage side, bring 1 needle from NWP to WP and knit 1 row. Repeat this last row until you have 169 stitches and 106 rows. Knit even for 100 rows, do 1x1 rib for 30 rows and bind off.
Front: RC 0. Right neck shaping. Skip 23 stitches and hang the next 63 stitches on 63 center needles. Set machine for Hold. Put 61 needles on the left in HP and knit 1 row to the left. Wrap adjacent needle in HP and knit 1 row to the right. Remembering always to wrap the adjacent HP needle, bring 1 needle at right (carriage side) from NWP to WP and 1 needle on the left from HP to WP and knit 2 rows. Repeat these 2 rows 9 times, row count 22. Bringing 1 needle carriage side and 2 needles from HP to WP on the left, knit 2 rows. Repeat 2 times, row count 28. Bring 1 needle up on carriage side and 3 needles from HP to WP on the left, knit 2 rows. Repeat 1 time, row count 32. Do not cut yarn.
RC 0. Left neck shaping. Using a separate yarn end (enough to do the 32 rows) bring all needles into HP except the 2 on the left. Drape yarn over the last needle on right in HP, weight with clip and knit 1 row to the left. Bring 1 needle on the left (carriage side) into WP and 1 needle on right from HP to WP and knit 2 rows, remembering to wrap the last needle in HP each time. Repeat 9 times. Bring 1 needle on the carriage side to WP and 2 needles on the right from HP to WP and knit 2 rows. Repeat 2 times. Bring 1 needle on carriage side to WP and 3 needles on the right from HP to WP and knit 2 rows. Repeat 1 time. Bring 1 needle on carriage side to WP and knit 1 row. Drape end yarn over last needle in HP and cut yarn. Weight with clip. Carriage is on right side. Bring all the needles in WP and using the yarn from the right side neck shaping, continue to increase each side of front as for the back until row count reaches 106 rows and 169 stitches. Knit even for 100 rows, do 1x1 rib for 30 rows and bind off.
Sleeves: Both alike. RC 0. Hang 23 stitches between front and back on center 23 needles. Bring 1 needle from each side from NWP to WP and hang the first loops, 1 from the front and 1 from the back onto them and knit 2 rows. Repeat until all loops have been picked up and you have 129 stitches and RC is 106. Knit 28 rows, decreasing 1 stitch on each side every 4 rows. Remove onto waste yarn and put back on 85 stitches, spacing the decreases evenly. Do 1x1 rib for 15 rows and bind off.
Finishing: Steam garment, being careful not to stretch the ribbing, seam the neck ribbing, side and sleeve seams.
You may pattern the body and sleeves of this sweater. I have done it in lace and fine lace, and I plan to try it in cotton someday. I find that hand manipulating the needles when doing the neck shaping is the least confusing!
Cathie's Note: Although Gene's sweater is about a size 38, she has made it easy to knit other sizes by given the exact row counts and number of stitches. Simply divide her stitches and rows by her gauge, and you'll have the exact inches she has in the sweater. Change the inches to the size you need and multiply by your gauge to get the stitches and rows you'll need.
