Easy No Sew Buttonhole

with Thanks to her dear friend Elsie, who showed (or taught) her this

Back on my KM after a few years off....anyway I've been playing around with vertical buttonholes, and although they seem easy enough to do alot of the ''after'' work is not necessary.. if the little loop between needles is put onto the nearest WP needle.

First arrange FIVE needles on both sides of the centre '0' on both beds for 1x1 rib and do your usual tubular cast on.

Set your carriages to HOLD.
Now with the carriage on YOUR Right, push the 5 needles of both beds on your left to HOLD   KNIT 5 rows on the needles in WP on your right..... it is important here to note that you are working in ODD numbers.

You will find that the carriage is now on your left..   So now put ALL needles to HOLD and run the carriages back to your right....

Now set the 5needles at your LEFT to WP leaving the 5 at your right on hold,  Knit ONE and one row only stop..

This is the tricky bit but with a bit of patience this it what stops you having to sew up the edges afterwards...  Look at the knitting  and in between the last held needle and the first WP needle you will see a little \ which is part of the ^ knitting...lift the \ loop with a transfer tool, up and onto the nearest WP Needle to it.....now do this on every ODD row (1; 3; 5;) to complete the button hole....so every odd row in this case, row 1, 3, AND 5 you will be picking up this little loop...   after the fifth row, set all needles to WP and knit the amount of rows needed between holes.  then repeat for next button hole.

Don't sew it together afterwards .. Knit it in now... for a neat button hole...

here is a sample of a finished band.. you can't see the holes even with a plain yarn..and the 'pick up' method means you don't have to finish that bit off..

Have fun, experiment... using your tension swatch it is easy to work out how many rows between each buttonhole worked.... now using FIMO make some buttons to match your yarn ...
